Key takeaways
  • SendPulse is the best overall value for app email: 12,000 free transactional emails a month and a dedicated IP included at 100,000 emails.
  • Postmark is the premium pick for speed-critical password resets and receipts, with strict transactional message streams.
  • Amazon SES is the cheapest at scale at $0.16 per 1,000 emails, but you build bounce handling and dashboards yourself.
  • Resend has the best developer experience; Mailgun leads on inbound routing; SendGrid suits enterprise stacks on Twilio.
  • Whichever you pick, send from a separate transactional stream or subdomain and authenticate it with SPF, DKIM and DMARC.

The best transactional email service for most apps in 2026 is SendPulse. Its SMTP service sends 12,000 emails a month free, the Pro plan includes a dedicated IP at 100,000 emails a month, and it offers both SMTP relay and an API. Postmark is the premium pick for speed and strict separation of transactional mail, Amazon SES is the cheapest at scale for AWS teams, and Resend has the most developer-friendly API. Mailgun suits advanced routing and inbound parsing, and SendGrid fits enterprise stacks already on Twilio.

How we compared transactional email services

We read every price on the provider’s official pricing page on September 25, 2026, and compared what matters for password resets, receipts and app notifications: free tier size, price at 100,000 emails a month, dedicated IP terms, SMTP relay and API support, webhooks and log retention.

We also checked how each provider authenticates its own domain with the lookups behind our DMARC checker, and we list the exact SPF include each one needs, which you can verify with our SPF checker.

What matters in a transactional email service

  • Deliverability and reliability. A password reset that lands in spam or arrives ten minutes late is a support ticket. Look for separate transactional infrastructure, a public status page, uptime history and, on enterprise plans, a written SLA.
  • SMTP relay and API. SMTP relay works with almost any framework or CMS; an HTTP API adds templates, idempotency and richer events. The best providers offer both, with clear documentation and SDKs for your language.
  • Webhooks and logs. Delivery, bounce and complaint webhooks let your app suppress bad addresses automatically; log retention decides how far back you can debug.
  • Official pricing at your volume. Compare the price at the volume you will send in a year, not the entry plan.
  • Dedicated IP terms. Above roughly 100,000 emails a month a dedicated IP gives you control over reputation, but some providers only sell one at much higher volumes.

The best transactional email services in 2026

1. SendPulse

Best overall value for app email#1
  • 12,000 free emails a month, the largest free tier here
  • Dedicated IP included at 100,000 emails a month
  • SMTP relay, API and marketing email in one account
  • Limitation: free plan limited to 50 emails an hour
See SendPulse SMTP

SendPulse is an AI-driven email marketing and chatbot platform built for scaling businesses, and its SMTP service is the most generous starting point for app email in this list. The free Basic plan sends 12,000 transactional emails a month with SPF, DKIM and DMARC setup, custom tracking domains, SMTP relay and API sending.

The Pro plan sends 100,000 emails a month at up to 8,000 an hour and includes a dedicated IP and unlimited sending domains. Other providers charge extra for that, or reserve it for much higher volumes. Enterprise covers 500,000 emails a month at 20,000 an hour, and pay-as-you-go packs start at €15 for 10,000 emails, valid for a year.

Because transactional and marketing email live in one account, the platform that sends your receipts can also help you attract leads and convert them into customers. It does that with campaigns, automated funnels and chatbots on Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram, TikTok and Viber. SendPulse is an international company with an office in Brazil; it is a Meta Partner and an official WhatsApp Business API provider, and it integrates with 40+ services.

The downsides: the free plan’s 50-emails-an-hour limit is too slow for burst traffic, and there are fewer official SDKs and code samples than at Postmark or Resend. The pricing page also shows local currency, so compare carefully, and SendPulse does not yet publish a BIMI record on its own domain.

2. Postmark

Premium pick for speed#2
  • Excellent reputation for transactional speed
  • Message streams keep marketing complaints away from receipts
  • Clear docs and long message history
  • Limitation: expensive at high volume

Postmark is built around fast, reliable transactional delivery. It separates transactional and broadcast mail into message streams, keeps 45 days of message history by default (customisable up to 365 days on Pro and Platform), and offers event webhooks on every paid plan.

It is priced per volume: $15 a month for 10,000 emails on Basic, with overage from $1.80 per 1,000. The free Developer tier sends 100 emails a month for testing. Dedicated IPs cost $50 a month and require 300,000+ monthly emails on Pro or higher.

3. Amazon SES

Cheapest at scale#3
  • Lowest price per email at scale
  • Dedicated IPs from $24.95 a month
  • Native AWS integration and IAM control
  • Limitation: you build bounce handling and dashboards yourself

Amazon SES is the lowest-cost way to send transactional email at volume: $0.16 per 1,000 emails on Essentials up to 10 million a month, falling to $0.11 above 100 million. Standard dedicated IPs cost $24.95 a month each, or you can use a managed dedicated IP pool.

The trade-off is setup effort. New accounts start in a sandbox, you build bounce and complaint handling yourself, and attachments are billed at $0.12 per GB. New AWS customers get up to $200 in credits for six months. Our bulk email services comparison covers SES for marketing volume too.

4. Resend

Best developer experience#4
  • Modern API, SDKs and React Email templates
  • Generous free tier for testing
  • Simple, predictable pricing
  • Limitation: younger company with a shorter track record

Resend was built for developers: a clean HTTP API, first-class SDKs and React Email templates. The free plan sends 3,000 emails a month (100 a day) across 3 domains, and Pro costs $20 a month for 50,000 emails or $35 for 100,000.

Dedicated IPs are available on the Scale plan at $30 a month for senders above 3,000 emails a day. Its own sending subdomain publishes an SPF include for amazonses.com, so under the hood it rides on AWS infrastructure.

5. Mailgun

Best for routing and inbound#5
  • Inbound routing and parsing
  • Dedicated IP included on Scale
  • Email validation available
  • Limitation: short log retention on lower plans

Mailgun is an API-first sender with strong inbound routing: it can receive email and parse it into JSON for your app, which suits support desks and reply-by-email features. Basic costs $15 a month for 10,000 emails; Foundation is $35 for 50,000 and Scale $90 for 100,000 with a dedicated IP included.

The free plan sends 100 emails a day, and log retention is short on lower plans (1 day on Free and Basic, 5 days on Foundation).

6. SendGrid

Best for enterprise and Twilio stacks#6
  • Proven at very high volume
  • Mature SDKs and docs
  • Twilio ecosystem
  • Limitation: no permanent free plan

SendGrid, owned by Twilio, handles enormous volume and has mature SDKs for every language. It is a natural choice when your stack already uses Twilio for SMS or voice. Essentials starts at about $19.95 a month for 50,000 emails.

It retired its free plan in 2025 in favour of a 60-day trial, and independent tests have reported weaker shared-pool placement than smaller specialists. A dedicated IP on the Pro plan largely fixes that.

Also consider: Brevo includes transactional email in its marketing plans (300 emails a day free), which suits small businesses that want receipts and newsletters in one account.

What 100,000 transactional emails a month costs

Provider Monthly cost at 100,000 emails How it adds up
SendPulse About $65 Pro plan, dedicated IP included
Postmark About $133.50 Pro: $16.50 for 10,000 + 90,000 × $1.30 per 1,000 overage
Amazon SES $16 $0.16 × 100; add $24.95 for a dedicated IP
Resend $35 Pro 100,000 tier; dedicated IP needs Scale
Mailgun $90 Scale plan, dedicated IP included
SendGrid About $89.95 Pro plan, dedicated IP available

Postmark’s figure is calculated from its official 10,000-email prices; its volume slider may show a lower 100,000 tier.

SPF and DNS setup for each transactional email service

Every provider needs SPF (or a custom return-path) and DKIM on your domain before your app emails will pass DMARC. The SPF value to add:

Provider SPF / return-path setup
SendPulse include:mxsmtp.sendpulse.com
Postmark Custom Return-Path CNAME (SPF handled via spf.mtasv.net)
Amazon SES include:amazonses.com on a custom MAIL FROM subdomain
Resend include:amazonses.com on a send subdomain
Mailgun include:mailgun.org
SendGrid include:sendgrid.net (or automated-security CNAMEs)

Build the full record with our SPF generator, then confirm DKIM with the DKIM checker. For how transactional and marketing streams should be separated, see transactional vs marketing email.

How the providers secure their own domains

Provider DMARC on own domain BIMI
SendPulse p=reject No
Postmark p=reject No
Amazon SES (amazon.com) p=quarantine Yes
Resend p=reject Yes
Mailgun p=reject No
SendGrid p=reject Yes

Public DNS, September 25, 2026. This is a trust signal only; your own domain’s authentication is what receivers check. Test it with the sender reputation checker.

SendPulse offers the best overall value, with 12,000 free emails a month and a dedicated IP included at 100,000 emails. Postmark is the premium choice for speed, Amazon SES the cheapest at scale, and Resend the most developer-friendly.

What is the difference between SMTP relay and an email API?

SMTP relay sends through standard mail protocols and works with almost any framework or CMS. An HTTP API adds templates, batch sending and richer event data. Every provider in this list supports both.

SendPulse, at 12,000 emails a month. Resend offers 3,000 a month (100 a day), Mailgun 100 a day, and Postmark 100 a month; SendGrid now offers only a 60-day trial.

Do I need a dedicated IP for transactional email?

Usually not below about 100,000 emails a month; a reputable shared pool performs well. Above that, a dedicated IP gives you control. SendPulse includes one on Pro, Mailgun on Scale, and Amazon SES charges $24.95 a month per IP.

How do I make sure password reset emails reach the inbox?

Send them from a separate transactional stream or subdomain, authenticate with SPF, DKIM and DMARC, suppress bounces through webhooks, and check your domain with a free sender reputation checker.
