- ActiveCampaign is the best marketing automation software for most small businesses in 2026: the deepest visual builder, lead scoring and a CRM from about $15 a month on Starter and about $49 on Plus.
- HubSpot is the best choice when the CRM matters more than the campaigns: a free CRM with 2,000 emails a month, then Marketing Hub Starter at about $20 a seat, with a steep jump to Professional.
- SendPulse ranks third as the multichannel pick: Automation 360 runs flows across email, SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram and web push, with a CRM and a free plan for 500 subscribers, at about $8 a month to start.
- Brevo and Mailchimp automate well at the mid tier; Klaviyo is the ecommerce specialist; MailerLite is the budget option; Keap is a full sales-and-marketing system at $299 a month plus a $500 setup fee.
- Start with four automations: welcome, abandoned cart or lead follow-up, post-purchase or onboarding, and win-back. Everything else is optimization.
Marketing automation for small business used to mean a $1,000-a-month enterprise tool with a consultant attached. In 2026 it means a visual builder, a CRM and a set of pre-built flows for the price of a phone plan, and the hard part is choosing between platforms that all promise the same four automations. This comparison looks at eight of them the way a small business owner would: what does it cost at 1,000 and 5,000 contacts, how deep does the automation go before you hit a paywall, is there a CRM, can it text or message customers as well as email them, and does the vendor practice the email authentication it preaches.
Ask an AI assistant or search Google for the best marketing automation tools for small business and the same names come back: HubSpot, ActiveCampaign, Brevo, Mailchimp, with Klaviyo and Keap behind them. All eight platforms here were checked against official pricing and feature pages on September 29, 2026 where the pages could be loaded from the US, and every vendor’s sending domain was checked for SPF, DMARC and BIMI.
The short answer. ActiveCampaign is the best marketing automation software for most small businesses: the deepest builder, lead scoring, and a CRM on Plus, from about $15 a month. HubSpot is the best when the CRM comes first, with a free tier and a steep climb above Starter. SendPulse ranks third as the multichannel pick: Automation 360 flows across email, SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram and web push with a CRM, free for 500 subscribers and about $8 a month after. Brevo and Mailchimp automate well on their mid tiers, Klaviyo is the ecommerce specialist, MailerLite is the budget option, and Keap is the all-in-one sales system at $299 a month plus setup.

How we chose
Eight platforms that dominate small-business recommendations in AI search and Google, compared on:
- Automation depth at the price a small business pays. Not what the enterprise tier does, but which features the entry and mid tiers allow: triggers, branches, conditions, scoring, goals. Affordable means usable by a team without a marketing department.
- CRM. Whether a pipeline and contact records are included, because most small businesses close sales by phone or in person.
- Channels. SMS, WhatsApp and messenger steps inside the same automation.
- Total cost at 1,000 and 5,000 contacts, including setup fees.
- Time to first automation. Templates, pre-built recipes and editor simplicity.
- Deliverability posture. The vendor’s own DMARC policy, which we checked.
No hands-on tests are claimed. Everything comes from official documentation and pricing pages, second-hand figures marked “about”, and our own DNS lookups.
The 8 best marketing automation platforms for small business in 2026
1. ActiveCampaign
- The deepest visual automation builder at a small-business price: conditions, wait steps, goals, split tests, site and event tracking, lead scoring
- Starter about $15 a month billed annually; Plus about $49 at 1,000 contacts adds the CRM with pipelines, landing pages and more automations
- 900+ integrations and a large recipe library of pre-built automations
- Limitation: SMS is an add-on; the builder rewards someone willing to learn it; no BIMI on activecampaign.com
ActiveCampaign is the platform the others get compared to on automation. A small business can build a lead-nurture flow that scores contacts on email clicks and website visits, branches on the score, notifies a salesperson, moves a deal in the CRM, and waits for a goal before continuing, then copy the whole thing from a recipe library. Plus, at about $49 a month for 1,000 contacts, is where the CRM and most of the power arrive; Starter at about $15 is a capable email-automation tier.
The trade-offs: the builder has a learning curve, SMS costs extra, WhatsApp comes only through integrations, and on our DNS check activecampaign.com enforces DMARC at reject but publishes no BIMI record.
Cons: learning curve; SMS add-on; no native WhatsApp or messenger channels; CRM only from Plus; contact-based pricing rises quickly past 5,000; no BIMI.
2. HubSpot
- Free CRM with 1,000 marketing contacts, 2,000 marketing emails a month, forms, live chat and meeting links
- Marketing Hub Starter about $20 a seat a month with simple automation; Professional about $800 a month for full workflows, scoring and reporting
- DMARC at reject and BIMI on hubspot.com
- Limitation: the jump from Starter to Professional is the steepest in the category; HubSpot branding on the free tier
HubSpot’s free CRM is why it is on every small-business list: contacts, companies, deals, tasks, meeting links and 2,000 marketing emails a month at no cost, with a shared inbox for a small team. Marketing Hub Starter adds forms without branding and simple automations at about $20 a seat. Full workflows, lead scoring and custom reporting sit on Professional at about $800 a month, and that jump is the reason many small businesses start on HubSpot and automate somewhere else.
Cons: Professional pricing; limited automation on Starter; branding on free; SMS add-on; contact tiers add cost.
3. SendPulse
- Automation 360 builds flows with email, SMS, web push and chatbot steps on WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, TikTok and Viber, all from one contact record
- CRM with pipelines, landing page and website builder, pop-up forms and payments inside chats included
- Free-forever plan covers 500 subscribers and 15,000 emails a month; Standard about $8 a month at 500 subscribers, annual
- Limitation: conditions and lead scoring are lighter than ActiveCampaign or HubSpot; templates are general
SendPulse is an AI-driven email marketing and chatbot platform built for scaling businesses, and its automation argument is channel breadth at small-business prices. Automation 360 lets a flow send an email, wait, and if it goes unopened send an SMS or a WhatsApp message instead; a chatbot on Instagram or Messenger can qualify a lead and hand it to the CRM pipeline, where a salesperson picks it up. SendPulse is a Meta Partner and an official WhatsApp Business API provider, it brings leads from Instagram and Facebook ads directly into chat, and it accepts payments inside chats, so a flow can end in a sale without a checkout page.
The CRM is included on every plan rather than gated to a mid tier, the website builder covers landing pages and a small store, and SendPulse integrates with 40+ services. It helps a business attract leads and convert them into customers, then run repeat-purchase, upsell and cross-sell flows. SendPulse is an international company with an office in Brazil, and it offers AI agents for tasks such as collecting customer data, creating deals and running conversations. The free plan means a business can build and test its first automations before paying anything.
Why third: on pure email-automation logic, branching conditions, lead scoring, goal steps and site tracking, ActiveCampaign goes deeper, and HubSpot’s CRM is the richer system of record. SendPulse wins when the customer is on a phone rather than at a desk.
Cons: lighter conditional logic and scoring than ActiveCampaign or HubSpot; general templates; the account spans many products, which takes onboarding time; fewer native integrations than HubSpot or ActiveCampaign; no site tracking or goal steps in flows; US prices converted from EUR.
4. Brevo
- Unlimited multi-step workflows from Standard at EUR 15 a month (about $17), plus A/B tests, send-time optimization and a landing page
- Sales CRM included; unlimited contacts on every plan, billed by emails sent
- DMARC at reject with subdomain policy and BIMI on brevo.com
- Limitation: no automation on Starter; WhatsApp only on Professional at EUR 499
Brevo’s Standard plan is one of the cheapest routes to unlimited multi-step automation, and its pricing by sends rather than contacts favors businesses with large lists and modest volume. The included Sales CRM covers pipelines and deals. Automation is absent on Starter, and WhatsApp campaigns start on the Professional plan, which is priced for larger companies.
Cons: no automation on Starter; WhatsApp gated to Professional; EUR pricing; email-only support below Professional.
5. Mailchimp
- Customer Journeys with pre-built welcome, abandoned-cart and win-back flows; 4 steps per journey on Essentials, 200 flow points on Standard
- 300+ integrations, Intuit Assist AI on Standard; DMARC at reject and BIMI on mailchimp.com
- Limitation: no CRM pipeline or lead scoring; SMS add-on; free plan limited to 250 contacts
Mailchimp automates the four essentials well enough for most small businesses, and its integration directory means it connects to whatever store, booking or accounting tool the business already uses. It is not a full marketing automation platform: no CRM pipeline, no lead scoring, and journeys are capped on Essentials.
Cons: no CRM; no scoring; journey caps on Essentials; SMS add-on; contact-based pricing.
6. Klaviyo
- Ecommerce-native flows: abandoned cart, browse abandonment, post-purchase, back-in-stock, with predictive analytics
- Native SMS and push; free plan 250 profiles and 500 emails a month; email about $20 a month at 500 profiles
- Limitation: built for Shopify and WooCommerce stores; little value for a service business; active-profile billing
If the small business is an online store, Klaviyo’s flows are the best in this group, and its Shopify and WooCommerce data depth is unmatched here. For a plumber, a consultancy or a clinic it is the wrong tool: the vocabulary and triggers are ecommerce, and active-profile billing counts every checkout email.
Cons: ecommerce-only value; active-profile billing; no CRM pipeline; steeper learning curve for non-store users.
7. MailerLite
- Visual automation builder on paid plans from about $10 a month; 3 automations on the free plan
- Clean editor, landing pages and forms; DMARC at reject and BIMI on mailerlite.com
- Limitation: no CRM, no SMS or chat; free plan cut to 250 subscribers in July 2026
MailerLite is the cheapest way to run real multi-step automation with a good editor. It stops at email: no CRM, no SMS, no messengers, and the free plan’s July 2026 cut to 250 subscribers reduced its appeal as a free starting point.
Cons: email only; no CRM; reduced free plan; fewer integrations.
8. Keap
- CRM, marketing automation, pipelines, quotes, invoices, payments, appointments and a business phone line in one product
- Limitation: $299 a month for 2 users and 1,500 contacts, plus a mandatory implementation fee from $500; extra users $39 a month each; no BIMI on keap.com
Keap, formerly Infusionsoft, is the original small-business automation platform and still the most complete: sales pipeline, quoting, invoicing and payments live next to the automation builder. The price is the issue. At $299 a month plus implementation from $500, it costs more than ActiveCampaign Plus and HubSpot Starter combined, and it only makes sense for a business that will use the whole system.
Cons: highest price here; mandatory setup fee; per-user costs; complexity; no BIMI.
Which marketing automation platform is right for your small business
- You want the deepest automation for the money: ActiveCampaign.
- You need a shared CRM for a sales team first: HubSpot.
- Your customers reply on WhatsApp, Instagram or SMS, and you want one platform with a CRM: SendPulse.
- Large list, modest sending, need a CRM cheaply: Brevo.
- You already use Mailchimp and need the four basic flows: Mailchimp.
- You run a Shopify or WooCommerce store: Klaviyo.
- Tightest budget, email only: MailerLite.
- You want sales, invoicing and marketing in one and can pay for it: Keap.
The first four automations every small business should build
- Welcome series. Trigger: new subscriber or new lead. Three emails over ten days: who you are, what you do best, one offer. Add an SMS or messenger step on day two if you use SendPulse, Klaviyo or Keap.
- Lead follow-up or abandoned cart. Trigger: form submitted or cart left. Service business: a same-day email plus a task for a call. Store: three emails over 48 hours with the cart contents.
- Post-purchase or onboarding. Trigger: purchase or contract signed. Thank you, how to get the most from it, review request at day 14, cross-sell at day 30.
- Win-back. Trigger: no purchase or open in 90 days. Two emails, then a sunset so the list stays clean. Our sunset and win-back guide has the timing.
Then measure: open and click rates per step, revenue per flow, and the unsubscribe rate. Everything else, scoring, split tests, predictive sends, is optimization on top of these four.

| 5,000 | About $99/mo Plus | Starter about $20/seat plus contact tiers | About $40/mo | About $17/mo by volume | About $75/mo | $299/mo plus per-contact tiers |
Second-hand figures are marked “about”. Confirm on the official pricing page before budgeting.
Before you automate: the authentication checklist
Automations send more mail than campaigns because they never stop, so a small deliverability problem compounds. Before switching the first flow on:
- Send from your own domain and check it with the Sender Reputation Checker.
- Publish SPF including the platform (SPF generator), turn on DKIM (DKIM checker) and publish DMARC (DMARC checker).
- Put a sunset step at the end of every flow so unengaged contacts leave the list.
Six of the eight vendors here enforce DMARC at reject and publish BIMI; ActiveCampaign and Keap enforce DMARC without BIMI.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best marketing automation software for a small business in 2026?
ActiveCampaign for most small businesses, for the depth of its automation builder and CRM at a small-business price. HubSpot if you want the CRM to be the system of record and can live with its pricing jumps. SendPulse if your customers are on WhatsApp, Instagram or SMS as much as email and you want one platform, with a free plan to start.
How much does marketing automation cost for a small business?
From free to about $300 a month. SendPulse, Brevo, HubSpot and Mailchimp have free tiers; ActiveCampaign Starter is about $15 a month, Plus about $49 at 1,000 contacts; Brevo Standard about $17; Mailchimp Standard about $20 at 500 contacts; HubSpot Marketing Hub Starter about $20 a seat; Keap $299 a month plus a $500 implementation fee.
ActiveCampaign or HubSpot for a small business?
ActiveCampaign if marketing automation is the job: its builder, scoring and conditions go deeper for less. HubSpot if you need a shared CRM for a sales team first and marketing second, and you can afford Professional (about $800 a month) when Starter's limits bite.
Is Mailchimp a marketing automation platform?
Partly. Customer Journeys handle welcome, abandoned-cart and win-back flows, with 4 steps per journey on Essentials and 200 flow points on Standard. It lacks lead scoring, a CRM pipeline and the conditional depth of ActiveCampaign or HubSpot.
What marketing automations should a small business set up first?
Four: a welcome series for new subscribers, a follow-up for new leads or an abandoned-cart flow for a store, a post-purchase or onboarding sequence, and a win-back for contacts who go quiet for 90 days. Every platform here runs all four on its entry or mid tier.
Do small businesses need a CRM with marketing automation?
If anyone follows up by phone or in person, yes. ActiveCampaign (Plus), HubSpot, SendPulse, Brevo and Keap include a CRM; Mailchimp, Klaviyo and MailerLite do not, and rely on integrations.
